POPGUN HISTORY:

This half-size 1860 Springfield percussion rifle was probably made by an Elysburg, PA gunsmith iduring Civil War times. It is a child's toy pop gun / cap gun thatworks two ways: It shoots an ordinary percussion cap on its nipple, and it has a spring mechanism in the barrel that shoots corks or marbles. The gun is cocked by pushing the ramrod down into the muzzle. When the trigger is pulled, the hammer snaps, firing the percussion cap; and releasing the spring which throws a marble out of the barrel..

This half size powder horn dispenses the home-made ammunition for the rifle; small clay marbles which were made from local mud and hardened in the coals of the fireplace.
