KENTUCKY MOUNTAIN
MOUTH BOW
As made by Clayton G. Bailey

The tuning pegs on the muoth bow have extended levers for ease of tuning.

IT'S SIMILAR TO A JEWS HARP

This two-stringed Kentucky Mountain Mouth Bow is a country cousin to the jews harp, or jaw harp.

A mouth bow is essentially a wooden bow with two metal strings. Every instrument is different due to the shape of the tree and the tree root burl. Theyn range in length from 3 to 5 feet long

The 2 strings are made of piano wire, and are tuned to the same note.

Turkey feather quills or short pieces of piano wire are used as picks for playing the mouth bow.

Simply tune both strings to the same note, and strum.

The strings pass over a bridge on the mouthpiece which is carved flat like a reed.

THE MOUTH BOW:

IT'S EASY TO PLAY

Tune both strings to the same note, and strum the strings with your pick .

Hold the lips against the flattened mouthpiece (opposite the bridge) while the strings are strummed.

Only the lips touch the mouthpiece while playing the Kentucky Mountain Mouth Bow..
