Clay is inoculated with a secret material that makes it raise like bread dough when it is baked. The resulting form is of an exploding bowl frozen in time.

A "Corrosive" warning symbol appears too late to prevent cracks and leaks in the bowl due to severe corrosion of the ceramic material.Medium: screen printed transfer decal on porcelain slip on expanding red clay body.

RESTRAINED BOTTLE - 2007

A fine, glazed skin of porcelain floats on the expanding terra cotta body, thus creating these Tectonic surfaces. Bottle is surrounded by wire restraint used in the kiln.

HERE'S HOW IT IS DONE:

IN THE KILN BEFORE FIRING:

Bottle is surrounded by a wire restraint and spacer blocks to protect the kiln walls from the expanding clay.

THE KILN AFTER FIRING:

After firing, the expanded bottle presses tightly against the wire restraints, and tilts sideways. The white patches are the original skin of the bottle. Oxidized metal wire falls away from the pot
