CLAYTON BAILEY'S CLINKER POTS
CLINKER JUGS AND BOTTLES THAT GROW IN THE KILN

?

WHAT IS THE SECRET OF CLINKER POTS?

Native red clay ismined on the artist's property, and is inoculated with a material containing fossil carbon. This makes the clay expand like bread dough when it is fired to 2000 degrees F. The result is the appearance of an explosion frozen in time.

EXPANDED CUBE

6" X 6" X 6" ht.
Red clay,
Porcelain, Underglaze decal

Remnants of an "EXPLOSIVES" label are still visible on the surface of the expanded cube.

Silkscreen printed decal on a 6" cube of clay.

EXPLODING BOTTLE

10" X 10" X 24" ht.
Expanding red clay
Porcelain, glaze

Expanding clay bursts through the side of the bottle.

EXPANDING PUFF BALL

6" X 6" X 6" ht.
Expanding red clay
Porcelain, glaze

A small amount of clay expansion causes this ball to slightly puff out of its smooth porcelain skin.

GREEN BOTTLE WITH 3 HANDLES

12" X 12" X 12" ht.
Expanding red clay
green glaze

A smooth, green glaze floats on the expanding clay body, creating these tectonic surfaces. Semi-molten clay leans to the side during the firing.

EXPLODING BOTTLE

8" X 8" X 14" ht.
Expanding red clay
Porcelain, Underglaze decal, glaze

Porcelain skin is torn apart by forces of the expanding clay.

2 STRESSED STONEWARE BOTTLES

8" X 8" X 14" ht.

Porcelain, mottled glaze

BIOHAZARD BOWL

9" X 9" X 4" ht
Expanding red clay
Porcelain, Underglaze decal

Biohazard symbol is screen printed on porcelain slip on expanding clay body. Beware of dangerous leaks.

HYPERTHERMIC EXPRESSIONISM
IN CERAMICS:

"This is a type of Extreme Pottery that reshapes itself in the kiln according to the laws of physics."The finished material closely resembles volcanic pumice."

Says inventor,

Clayton Bailey

EXPLODING BOTTLE

12" X 12" X 18" ht.
Expanding red clay
Porcelain, Underglaze decal

Screen printed "CALIFORNIA FIREWORKS" insignia printed on an exploding bottle.

Most potters don't want their pots explode like this.

CORROSIVE BOWL

14" X 14" X 4" ht
Expanding red clay
Porcelain, Underglaze decal

A "Corrosive" symbol warns of danger. Cracks and leaks in the bowl are due to the expansion of the ceramic material during firing.

RESTRAINED BOTTLE

8" X 8" X 18" ht.
Expanding red clay, porcelain, glaze, wire

A skin of porcelain floats on the terra cotta clay body, thus creating these tectonic plates when the clay expands in the kiln. The bottle is surrounded by a wire restraint used to protect the walls of the kiln during firing.

BIFURCATED BOTTLE

6" X 12" X 14" ht.
Expanding red clay
Porcelain, glaze

The expanding bottle separates vertically into two nearly equal halves.

HERE'S HOW IT IS DONE:

IN POT INTHE KILN BEFORE FIRING:

Bottle is surrounded by a wire restraint and spacer blocks to protect the kiln walls from the expanding clay.

THE POT IN THE KILN AFTER FIRING:

After firing, the expanded bottle presses tightly against the wire restraints, and tilts sideways. The white patches are the original skin of the bottle. Oxidized metal wire falls away from the pot
