H. C. Westermann visits us in St. Louis- 1962

In 1963, Clayton was hired to teach a class in the Architecture School at Washington University in St. Louis. H. C. Westermann was also hired to teach a class at this same time. Before Westermann left the City, we had a going away party for him at our house. Throughout the evening he teased me about painting the living room walls green. He wouldn"t listen to my explanation that the landlord gave me the paint because I had to repair the walls before we moved. We were also getting ready to move to Whitewater, Wisconsin where Clayton was hired to be an artist-in residence at the university. Westermann sent us a Thank You letter/drawing as was his style with all his friends.
Years later, Clayton donated his papers to the Smithsonian Archives, and Westermann"s letter was included. This past year, 2000, we were notified that our Westermann thank you letter was included in a show at the Smithsonian Museum.
In 1997, the Richmond Art Center, had a show of Westermann work, curated by David King and Melanie McKim. I videotaped David King talking about the work, life and friends of H. C. Westermann, and it is the most asked for videotape of all that I have made.
